- Continued mobilization of farmers in the wider Muhoroni sub-county to create awareness on the project execution approach, timeframe and entrench ownership by local dairy farmers. OSIEPE leadership convened a meeting in which partners from ILRI, the county government, Heifer International and local dairy cooperatives met with farmer’s representatives to explore how the crush pens will be used, maintained and propelled as focal points for farmer engagement.
- Launch of use of crushes by smallholders to promote accelerated breeding through fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI). FTAI technology involves synchronizing the reproductive cycles of clusters of animals through hormone therapy followed by mass insemination.
- Continued mobilization of communities and local leadership to spread the message on dairy cattle improvement and synchrony of hormone and AI services
- Osiepe Peer Farmer Trainers (PFT) accompanied other farmers from other dairy cooperatives to a benchmarking trip to Kiambu County to learn modern dairy farming practiced by farmers in Kiambaa and Githunguri. The trip was organized by Heifer International.
- Hormone and AI service provision to cattle at the crush pens
- Establishment of nurseries with bracaria fodder seedling awaiting transplanting to seedbeds across the sub-County as part of fodder commercialization
- Discussions are underway for more activities on Agrovet stores, bulking barn for commercial fodder, dairy chilling and transport infrastructure/equipment and market development
The implementation of the Accelerated Dairy Value Chain Development (AVD) project in partnership with ILRI is on-course. After successful series of project initiation, targeted trainings, exposure and benchmarking trips, the following key activities have taken place.
