On Monday 6th March 2017, the field day organised jointly by OSIEPE Practical Action, USAID-KAVES and Kisumu County Government was successfully held at Oseng'teti - current headquarters of OSIEPE. The whole day event was attended by majority of OSIEPE CBO members, members of other local CBOs from Muhoroni sub-County, Muhoroni Dairy Cooperative leaders and members, smallholder farmers from the sub-county and representative of local businesses and NGOs. The county Government Department of Agriculture participated as co-facilitators of the learning event. OSIEPE leadership and members demonstrated their recent dairy value chain and organisational development achievements. USAID-KAVES presented their activities in various value chains and led the demonstration and learning on key dairy value chain aspects including housing, feeding and stock management. Other innovations show-cased for learning included renewable energy options for value chain advancement, input provision including veterinary drugs, fodder commercialisation with bracharia grass.The OSIEPE model of local stewardship for transformation was also presented under the leadership for change segment.

The partnership that OSPIEPE Practical Action has been nurturing over the last months continues to blossom with solid outcomes. OSIEPE is currently negotiating with Heifer Internal on further interactions to benefit expansion of dairy value chain. Meetings are planned for Friday 10th March and Tuesday 14th March 2017 to elaborate on the approach and concrete steps for the extension of support to OSIEPE Practical Action members and other smallholder farmers in Muhoroni sub-County on upscaling of fodder production, mobilizations for fixed time A.I. and additional trainings among other issues of mutual benefit. This will include upcoming workshops for all the AVCD Cooperatives and C.B.Os in Kisumu County organized by Heifer International and ILRI.
OSIEPE will also discuss with partners including the County Government of Kisumu and the local administration to plan for construction of a milk cooler for bulking milk for organized market. Heifer International is partnering with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in providing the services under this partnership. Stay tuned for more information over the next days ... OSIEPE Practical Action continues to support wider adoption of commercialization in various value chains. As part of our partnership strategy and reach to other smallholder farmers, we are joining hands with USAID-Kenya Agricultural Value Chains Enterprises (KAVES) project in convening a field day. The event to take place Monday 6th March 2017 is attracting members of OSIEPE CBO, farmers from Muhoroni sub-County. On this occasion USAID-KAVES in conjunction with the County Government of Kisumu – department of agriculture, will demonstrate on-going value chain promotion activities and technologies.
Participants at the field day, at Oseng'teti Office, will share knowledge and access technologies and innovation on especially dairy fodder commercialization, technical advice on the design of premises, target products, equipment sourcing, return on investment, good value chain development. Other commodity value chains will also be show-cased with a focus on “no-risk” activities such as yield improvement, establishment of new market linkages, possible networking between farmers, traders, and extension staff.
